How to get your AI API Keys for your Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) plan in Tag

Hello and Welcome to Tag!

When you select a BYOK subscription plan in Tag, you must connect an AI engine for the platform’s AI features to function. This requires linking an AI API key associated with an account from an approved AI vendor.

An API key functions like a secure access credential that allows Tag to communicate with the selected AI engine.

An AI vendor is a company that provides the AI engines Tag uses to extract information from source documents and to transform that data into generated reports.

To get started, we recommend setting up Google Gemini (required to extract data from pdf documents) and Anthropic Claude (best at transforming data and generating reports). Without those two API Keys, Tag’s functionality will be limited.

Follow the instructions below to get your AI API Keys.

Your Questions, Answered

  • All four vendors meet compliance standards with short-term data retention policies.

    • OpenAI, Anthropic and Cohere use a no-train policy and store data for up to 30 days for security purposes only

    • Google Gemini can be covered by a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) if you follow a few simple steps:

    1. Go to [Google Cloud Console](https://console.cloud.google.com)

    2. Select your project

    3. Navigate to APIs & Services > Enabled APIs

    4. Find Generative Language API

    5. Look for BAA/Compliance settings in the API configuration

    • Google Gemini with a BAA is well suited for healthcare and other regulated data. Tag may provide other BAA options in a future release.

    • Cohere is a Canadian company with data residency options in Canada, making it particularly important for Canadian organizations with data sovereignty requirements.

  • The vendors differ significantly in pricing:

    • Google Gemini offers the lowest overall cost

    • OpenAI GPT has moderate pricing, more expensive than Google but cheaper than Anthropic

    • Cohere has competitive pricing, generally comparable to or lower than OpenAI

    • Anthropic Claude is the highest cost option among the four

    • Note that both OpenAI and Anthropic offer an economy mode (Batch API) where calls take longer but cost roughly half the price. Tag does not support economy mode for Google Gemini or Cohere.

  • Each vendor has distinct capabilities for handling complex tasks:

    • Google Gemini is weakest for complex tasks but excellent for verbatim extraction of structured text. It cannot handle repeating elements and will fail when these are present

    • OpenAI GPT has moderate accuracy and can handle repeating elements, though it sometimes confuses them. Extraction results can occasionally be slightly off-topic

    • Cohere performance is still being evaluated. Initial testing shows reasonable capability for standard tasks

    • Anthropic Claude is the most accurate and thorough option, handling repeating elements exceptionally well

    • For precision-critical work, Anthropic leads the field. OpenAI offers balanced performance, while Google is limited to simple autofill or static extraction tasks. Cohere's performance characteristics are still being assessed.

  • Processing speed varies considerably between vendors:

    • Google Gemini is the fastest, ideal for quick autofill of simple documents

    • OpenAI GPT has moderate and sometimes variable speed, described as hit or miss

    • Cohere has moderate speed, generally competitive with other mid-tier options

    • Anthropic Claude is the slowest, especially on long or complex prompts, but delivers the most accurate results

  • Recommended Use Cases

Anthropic Claude: Best choice overall for AI-Chains and complex content generation. Use Anthropic when accuracy is critical and you need advanced reasoning capabilities. Evaluate the cost and speed trade-offs against accuracy requirements for autofill use.

Google Gemini: Best for autofill of simple, structured data and single documents. Do not use for batch processing or AI-Chains. Recommended for structured forms. Use Google when you need fast, straightforward verbatim autofill and your document does not contain repeating elements.

OpenAI GPT: Good fallback for autofill when Anthropic is too slow or costly. For best results, split tasks into separate calls with highly tailored prompts. For example, use separate calls for progress reports and IPPs. Avoid using for AI-Chains as it is prone to hallucinations. Use OpenAI for mid-tier tasks where you need a balance of cost and speed.

Cohere: Recommended for Canadian organizations requiring data residency in Canada. Cohere is still being evaluated for specific use case recommendations in Tag.

IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU HAVE AI API KEYS FOR BOTH ANTHROPIC CLAUDE AND GOOGLE GEMINI. THESE TWO VENDORS WORKING IN COMBINATION WILL PROVIDE THE BEST TAG EXPERIENCE!

  • Yes! If you meet these 3 requirements you can swap between AI-vendors at run-time:

    1. You have an active account with the AI vendor(s) you wish to use

    2. Your AI API Keys are pasted into Tag

    3. You have purchased some AI credits/tokens from the vendors that can be used to make the call

Here is How to Select Your AI Vendor at Run-time:

    • In Tag's autofill wizard (extracting data from various sources), the 2nd page contains form level settings. Choose the AI vendor you want for each form - both vendor and model name can be varied between forms.

    • When running AI-Chains (data transformations) , you can also select AI vendor and model. The default choice is saved in the AI-Chain, which can be overridden when the AI-Chain is run.

You might wish to swap between AI vendors at run-time if there is a specific vendor that is better at a certain task, if cost is an issue, or if your usual vendor is having a slow day (as indicated by “call timed-out” messages). Feel free to experiment with swapping vendors to configure your experience to your liking.
